Life works in funny ways. Just when you think you’ve got things figured out, just when it seems like everything is going according to plan… that’s when something happens. Something small. Something big. Something that makes us realise we aren’t in control and never were. Something that lands at our feet and leaves us speechless and unsure of where to turn and what to do. Something that blindsides us, leaving us gasping for air, no thought in our heads except “how could this be happening?” and “what do we do now?”.
The gift that life is laying for us is growth. It’s change. It’s the possibility that something good comes from pain and when the crisis hits, when our world is turned upside down, when we are afraid, will we have the strenght, the wisdom to embrace the gift that’s there and welcome it with open arms?.

Como en sueños dormida, vestida de mar*
Esta mañana escuchaba la historia de Alfonsina Storni. Sintonicé la radio sólo un par de minutos de camino a la escuela y hablaban de esta poetisa Argentina y de cómo “Alfonsina y el mar” cuenta la historia de su trágica muerte. Ya había oído el nombre de esta canción desde años atrás, pero jamás la escuché. No fue sino hasta el pasado mes de Abril que lo hice y me pareció una canción muy triste. Sin embargo, una frase me gustó y es la que le da título a este pequeño escrito. Y bueno, el locutor del programa matutino “Qué escuchas, cuando escuchas” (Que me parece muy buen nombre para un programa), decía que esta mujer terminó con su vida, en un momento de depresión y sufrimiento, entre otras cosas porque padecía de cáncer de mama. Sí… esa enfermedad que se cree que puede aparecer en nuestras vidas en cualquier momento y cambiarlo todo. Alfonsina se arrojó de la escollera del Club Argentino de Mujeres en Mar del Plata el 25 de Octubre de 1938 (a la edad de 46 años).

3 Reasons for Teaching
I HATE THIS SO MUCH.
Why? Because introductory conversations always go like this:
Me: I’m a history teacher.
Person: Oh, you’re a teacher! It must be so nice to get summers off.
THANKS FOR IGNORING EVERY OTHER ASPECT OF MY JOB. Do I say: “Oh, you’re a (insert job here)? It must be nice to have your weekends off not grading papers!!!!!!!!!!” NO. Also, what am I doing this summer? Working part time, grad classes, and restructuring my curriculum for next year.
